Beatriz “Betty” Cuzzi passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, April 26, 2026, in Bethesda, Maryland. She was 85 years old. Her final conscious moments were spent at the community breakfast table of her new memory care home, Auxiliary House, surrounded by the gentle rhythms of daily life. She passed peacefully hours later at Suburban Hospital.
The youngest of eleven children, Betty was born on February 1, 1941, in Arequipa, Peru, to José Cuadros, general manager of the phone company, and Sarita Justo de Cuadros, a devoted homemaker remembered for her kindness and compassion. At the age of twelve, Betty moved with her family to Lima. As a child, she was fun-loving and sociable, often losing track of time while playing with friends or chatting a bit too much in school.
Betty had a deep love of learning and dreamed of pursuing higher education. But at the time, such opportunities were not typically encouraged for women, so she instead attended a technical high school, where she studied accounting.
At the age of fifteen, charming and lively, Betty met Jaime – a calm and thoughtful distant relative – who had come to study in Lima. Four years later, Jaime and Betty were married. Their young love matured and strengthened with time, becoming an inspiration for all who knew them.
Always supportive of Jaime’s career, Betty encouraged him to accept a 1-year scholarship to study in The Netherlands despite her expecting their first daughter, Sandra, born in 1963. After the birth of Ursula, their second daughter, in 1966, Betty decided to stop working and devote herself entirely to her young family.
In 1970, when Jaime was offered a position abroad with NASA, the family moved to Houston, Texas. Betty met this transition with remarkable courage, leaving behind her home, family, and language to build a new life in an unfamiliar country with two young daughters. Fortunately, their apartment community became a source of enduring friendships.
The expression “Behind every great man, there is a great woman” was true in the case of Betty and Jaime. Passionate about his research and working long hours, Jaime entrusted Betty with all the financial, educational, and logistical aspects of the household. She managed all this single-handedly and with determination. Her strength and leadership were the foundation upon which her family thrived.
One of Betty’s talents was sewing. She made the girls’ Christmas outfits every year, many of their formal ball dresses as they grew up, and even a whole set of cheerleader uniforms! They are beautiful pieces that reveal her attention to detail and love for work well done. She also loved classical music, reading good books, doing puzzles, and playing card games with her friends.
Betty held high expectations for herself and others in every aspect of life. Guided by her strong character and unwavering inner compass, she raised her two daughters in a principled and firm but fair way, with clarity and conviction. She set those high standards with compassion, reflected in her bright eyes and generous smile.
As her daughters grew older, Betty found time to go back to work. She became a tax preparer, earned her Enrolled Agent certification, and went on to found and lead the first successful Houston “Block Advisor” office, H&R Block’s premium service. Recognized for her exemplary work ethic, she built lasting relationships with her clients, often working for multiple generations of the same families. Betty retired at the age of 78, after more than four decades of service.
A devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, Betty made the trip up to Maryland and over to Paris for the birth of each of her four grandchildren. Following Peruvian tradition, she stayed for several weeks, caring for the older sibling and supporting the parents so they could rest and focus on their newborn. Her help was precious and reflected her generosity and love.
For more than fifty years, Houston remained Jaime and Betty’s home. The friendships they fostered there became family. In early 2023, they relocated to Maplewood Park Place, a retirement community in Bethesda to be closer to their eldest daughter, Sandra, and her husband, Ferdie. Although Betty experienced cognitive decline over time, she continued to bless others with her kind smile. After Jaime was diagnosed with leukemia, she was lovingly cared for at Maplewood by three wonderful women.
Just weeks before their 65th wedding anniversary on December 8, 2025, Jaime passed away. Only five months after his passing, Betty is now reunited with Jaime. Their love is eternal. And there is joy in heaven.
Betty’s life was defined by her drive for excellence, enduring love, and selfless devotion. Her legacy lives on in the values she instilled, the family she nurtured, and the countless lives she touched with her kindness, determination, and unwavering care.
Betty is survived by her daughters Sandra and Ursula; her sons-in-law, Ferdie Wang and Frédéric Fiault; and her grandchildren—Jared and his wife Maggie (Arlington), Lydia (Houston), Anaïs (Geneva), and Raphaël (Paris). She also leaves behind her great-grandson, Evan (18 months). Additionally, Betty is survived by two sisters, Teresita and Laura (Peru), a brother Renzo (Brazil), and a very large extended family, primarily residing in Peru.
Betty’s Mass of Christian Burial will be held on May 6th, 2026, at 9:45 a.m. at Our Lady’s Chapel of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Rockville.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Betty’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association.

A Betty le sobreviven sus hijas Sandra y Úrsula; sus yernos, Ferdie Wang y Frédéric Fiault; y sus nietos: Jared y su esposa Maggie (Arlington), Lydia (Houston), Anaïs (Ginebra) y Raphaël (París). También deja atrás a su bisnieto, Evan (18 meses). Además, a Betty le sobreviven dos hermanas, Teresita y Laura (Perú), un hermano, Renzo (Brasil), y una familia extendida muy numerosa, que reside principalmente en Perú.
La misa de funeral cristiano de Betty se celebrará el 6 de mayo de 2026, a las 9:45 a. m., en la Capilla de Nuestra Señora de la Iglesia Católica de St. Mary en Rockville.
