The funeral service will take place on Wednesday, November 15, 2023 at 10:45am EST (USA) / 11:45am GMT-4 (Bolivia) at St. Jane Frances De Chantal Catholic Church, located at 9701 Old Georgetown Rd, Bethesda, MD 20814. For family and friends in Bolivia, please note that the live stream for the mass will be at 11:45am (please scroll up to see the video).
The interment will take place immediately following the funeral service on Wednesday, October 15, 2023 at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, located at 13801 Georgia Ave, Silver Spring, MD 20906.
Obituary
Doris Lopez-Videla Guzman passed away on November 7, 2023. Doris lived a rich and full life caring for her family, dedicated to her church, spending many happy times with friends, and especially helping those in need. Before coming to the United States in 1955 from Bolivia, where she was born, Doris worked in Foreign Affairs in the U.S. Military Command. Then in the U.S., she had several administrative positions including working at International Trade and Technical Services and at WTTG Fox TV.
Her life then took a different trajectory, and she began working as a Spanish teacher, primarily to have more time to dedicate herself to helping cancer patients, her true calling. While Doris was very active socially- President of Alianza Ibero Americana twice, a Board Member of National Rehabilitation Hospital, member of Capital Speakers Club, member of the Bolivian Ladies Association – most of her time was spent helping others. For over 40 years, cancer patients from different parts of the world came to her for assistance in their health care.
She worked closely with the NIH National Cancer Institute and over the years became a fixture there, guided by doctors who would assist her in her mission to try to get the best treatment for those sick, never asking or expecting anything in return. When a patient excelled and survived, no one was happier than Doris. She became known as the person to go to if you needed help. Doris continued this until well into her 80’s until her decline in health prevented her from doing any more.
She is survived by her daughter Elizabeth Tracy (Michael), her brother Charles Videla (Carolyn) and many cherished relatives and friends. Viewing will be held on Tuesday, November 14, 2023, at Robert A. Pumphrey Funeral Home Bethesda from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial, Wednesday. November 15 at St. Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic Church in Bethesda, MD at 10:45 a.m. (time in Bolivia: 11:45 a.m.). Burial immediately to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Silver Spring, MD. Doris López-Videla Guzmán falleció el 7 de noviembre de 2023. Doris vivió una vida plena, cuidando a su familia, dedicada a su iglesia, pasando muchos momentos felices con amigos y, especialmente, ayudando las personas necesitadas. Antes de llegar a los Estados Unidos en 1955 desde Bolivia, donde nació, Doris trabajó en Asuntos Exteriores en el Comando Militar de los Estados Unidos. Luego, en los Estados Unidos, ocupó varios puestos administrativos, incluido el de Comercio Internacional y Servicios Técnicos y en WTTG Fox TV.
Su vida tomó entonces un rumbo diferente y comenzó a trabajar como profesora de español, principalmente para tener más tiempo para brindar ayuda a los pacientes con cáncer, su verdadera vocación. Si bien Doris era muy activa socialmente (presidenta de la Alianza Ibero Americana dos veces, miembro de la junta directiva del Hospital Nacional de Rehabilitación, miembro del Capital Speakers Club, miembro de la Asociación de Damas Bolivianas), la mayor parte de su tiempo lo dedicaba a ayudar a los demás. Durante más de 40 años, pacientes con cáncer de diferentes partes del mundo acudieron a ella en busca de ayuda para su atención médica.
Trabajó en estrecha colaboración con el Instituto Nacional del Cáncer del Instituto Nacional de Salud (NIH) y, a lo largo de los años, se convirtió en una figura fija allí, guiada por médicos que la apoyaban en su misión de tratar de obtener el mejor tratamiento para los enfermos, sin pedir ni esperar nada a cambio. Cuando un paciente sobresalía y sobrevivía, nadie era más feliz que Doris. Se hizo conocida como la persona a quien acudir si necesitaba ayuda. Doris continuó con esto hasta bien entrados los 80 años, hasta que su salud le impidió hacer más.
Le sobreviven su hija Elizabeth Tracy (Michael), su hermano Charles Videla (Carolyn) y muchos familiares y amigos queridos. El velorio se llevará a cabo el martes 14 de noviembre de 2023 en Robert A. Pumphrey Funeral Home Bethesda de 6 p.m. a 8 p.m. La Misa Cristiana el miércoles 15 de noviembre en la Iglesia Católica St. Jane Frances de Chantal en Bethesda, MD a las 10:45 a.m. (hora en Bolivia: 11:45 a.m.). El entierro se realizará inmediatamente después de la misa en el cementerio Gate of Heaven en Silver Spring, MD.
