Obituary

Sister Eileen C. Reid was born in New York City on April 16, the 3rd daughter of Nicholas Reid and Mary Ball Reid.  She grew up in the Bronx, where she attended the parish school staffed by the Religious of Jesus and Mary, and she graduated from their high school in Highland Mills, NY.  After earning her R.N. from St. Clare’s Hospital School of Nursing, she entered the religious community in 1962 and made her final profession in 1970.  She died January 4, 2026.

During the course of her active ministry as a Religious of Jesus and Mary, Sr. Eileen served the community in positions of local leadership in Maryland, Massachusetts and California.  She also led the USA Province as its Provincial Superior for 3 terms totaling 16 years. It was her inspiration and leadership that initiated the decision to explore establishing a mission in Haiti, where the sisters have now been serving since 1997.

Over the course of her time in the community, Sr. Eileen also earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing, as well as a master’s in theological studies.  She put all of these to good use at various times in service at the Bronx VA Hospital, and as a nurse and administrator in DC clinics operated by Health Care for the Homeless, Unity Health Care, and S.O.M.E.’s Kuehner House & Kuehner Place. In the late 1970’s, she also served for a time in a refugee camp in Thailand.

In addition to the members of her community, Sr. Eileen is survived by her two sisters, Sr. Patricia Reid, OSF and Cathy Egan, as well as by 4 nieces and 1 nephew, 6 grand nephews and 2 grandnieces.

From her Irish heritage comes a phrase that describes Sr. Eileen well:

She was a mighty woman!
