Obituary

Elizabeth May Briscoe was born to Azariah (Azi) and Millicent Briscoe on July 14, 1955, in Kingston, Jamaica – the fifth of six surviving children. She grew up in Pembroke Hall, Kingston, Jamaica. She attended Merl Grove Girls and Excelsior high schools. She received a diploma in Quantity Surveying from the College of Arts, Science and Technology (CAST), Jamaica in 1977 and a degree in Civil Engineering from Howard University, Washington, D.C in 1982.

While at CAST (now University of Technology), she met Glendon Burton. They were married in 1979, while both were attending Howard University. They have 2 children and 3 grandchildren. In 2019, she was diagnosed with a meningioma. She was recovering from this and other medical issues when she died peacefully on September 18, 2022.

Liz was first and foremost family oriented. She was constantly thinking of ways to make life and conditions around her better for her husband, her children and their children. She also kept in close touch with other, extended family members. She will be sorely missed.

She excelled in her career endeavors. Her most recent job in engineering was at the Anne Arundel County Department of Public Works, where she retired as Chief Engineer in 2016. She took the opportunity to change careers and pursue her true calling – to become a Science, Technology and Mathematics (STEM) teacher in Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS). She taught at Arrowhead Elementary until Spring 2020.

Her community-related work included management of the steelpan music program for several years at the Cultural Academy for Excellence (CAFÉ), a program to enrich the lives of young people through music and academic tutoring. More recently, she was working with CAFÉ on an advocacy program for Special Needs students – hoping to use her experiences with PGCPS and the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) to benefit other families in the community. She was also a founding member of the TAGE On Steel steelband and directed most of their music.

With her family, she was an active participant of the St. Barnabas’ Episcopal Church at Leeland, Upper Marlboro, Maryland, for over 35 years – including singing in the choir.

Liz made many, many friends along her journey, many of whom she has maintained over the decades. She will be sorely missed.

She is survived by husband: Glendon (Glen) Burton
Two children: Taye’ Burton and Karim Burton
Three grandchildren: Nadia Burton, Kaia Burton and Kingden Burton and
Siblings: Harold Briscoe, Ralston Briscoe, Thelma Murray, Juanita Briscoe and Carlton Briscoe.

The funeral service will be held 11:00 AM on Saturday, 29 October, 2022 at St. Barnabas’ Episcopal/Anglican Church, Upper Marlboro, Maryland. Condolences may be sent to Glen Burton – Deejay Glen on Facebook or DeejayGlen@yahoo.com – or to briscoeforrest@hotmail.com.
