Obituary
Gloria Lois Wolfe was born on December 6, 1927 in Jacksonville, Florida. She was generous and kind, and throughout her life showed unconditional love and support to her family and friends. Gloria attended Stanton High School where she was lovingly called “Wooff” and was involved in swimming, basketball, auditing, and the Girl’s Reserve. As a teenager, she was an active member of St. John’s Baptist Church, and remained so until leaving Jacksonville for college. Gloria attended West Virginia State College where she majored in business administration and was initiated into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. in her sophomore year.
In 1950, Gloria was recruited from college to work for the Federal Government in Washington, D.C. Throughout her career of more than 35 years, she held various clerical and secretarial roles across the U.S. Veteran’s Administration, the U.S. Department of Labor, and the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. At some point during her time in Washington, DC, she met the love of her life, James Leonard White, and they were married on August 2, 1956. At the time of his passing on September 8, 2013, they had been married 57 years.
Gloria continued to demonstrate her love for Christ through her dedicated and active membership to Holy Comforter Episcopal Church for over 60 years. During her tenure there, she served in numerous capacities, including leading the Altar Guild, teaching Sunday School, serving on the Evangelism, Lenten, and Senior Ministry committees, and being a member of the Episcopal Church Women (ECW) and Daughters of the King (DoK). Gloria was also actively involved in fundraising for the church and led the planning for many fun events like the annual trip to Ocean City, Maryland (with a stop at the farmer’s market on the way back!) and numerous shopping trips to Reading, Pennsylvania. She even coordinated two fashion show luncheons, where the theme for one of them involved her laying on a couch dreaming about what her wardrobe would be for the summer! She received many accolades and certificates of recognition for her hard work and dedication to the church. She was also known for being “sharp” with her church attire, often wearing bright colors and beautiful jackets, and always with a hat to match!
Gloria is remembered for her unconditional love for her husband James and her unwavering love for her children and grandchildren. She had immense love for Jame’s’ children from his first marriage and treated them as her own. She loved and was beloved by James’ sisters, and her own brother and sister who visited as often as they could. Gloria also established enduring relationships at work, and for many years, until she was no longer able, enjoyed regular outings with the “Lunch Bunch”, beloved colleagues from the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission. Gloria is also remembered for her good cooking! All who had the fortune of enjoying one of her meals know she could make a mean potato salad, pot of collard greens, and seafood gumbo! Her seafood stuffing recipe and crab mold became a staple at holiday events. Her love and generosity was a gift to those around her, and her kindness extended to everyone who came into her life.
Gloria passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 2, 2025 at 97 years of age. She is survived by her three daughters, Lisa, Mia, and Myra; one sister, Nancy; nine grandchildren, Trevor Matthew, Morgan, Bradli, Alexis, Ashley, Nick, Aaron, and Chris; one great-grandchild, Eliana; and a host of relatives and friends. She is predeceased by her husband, James; her son, James Jr. (Bubby); and her parents, Ruth Wolfe and Henry Wolfe.
