Monalie Bledsoe was born in Antigua, West Indies. She was the loving daughter of Lemuel George and Winifred Cochrane. Monalie emigrated to the United States as a teenager, and, except for a brief six-month period in Phoenix Arizona, has lived in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area since 1968.
She was a double graduate of Howard University, where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Juris Doctor degree. Monalie began her legal career with the District of Columbia City Counsel as a Legislative Assistant and then as a Legal Liaison Specialist with the D.C. Department of Corrections.
She later moved to the Federal Government, where she worked for a number of years as a Senior Attorney with the Merit Systems Protection Board. Monalie received Team Player Awards and other certificates in recognition of her contributions to the agency. In 1999 she left the Federal Government and started her own private law practice, where among other matters, she handled the legal aspect of Estate Planning. Monalie was a member of the D.C. and Maryland Bars, as well as the U.S. District Court and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, and the U.S. District Court for the State of Maryland.
She was an active member of her beloved Holy Comforter Episcopal Church since 1986. Monalie was a Senior Warden, Cell Leader, leader of the Steel Pan Group, organizer of the Lenten Program, member of the Altar Guild, and a member of Daughters of the King. She loved attending Bible Study sessions and increasing her spiritual knowledge. As Senior Warden, Monalie conducted monthly vestry meetings, worked with supply clergy, diligently went to Holy Comforter every Friday to print the Sunday bulletins, and opened the church on Sundays for morning service.
Monalie was the beloved mother of a son, Darryl. She was also a caring aunt to nieces – Tove, Wendy, Marcie (step-niece), Brenda, and Sherisse; and nephews – Addison, Hakim, and Elliot. Monalie had close relationships with numerous close and distant cousins in several countries, such as the United States, Canada, Great Britain, and Antigua. She was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings, who were Brenda, Cameron, Cunliffe, and Elford.
Monalie’s hobbies included walking, reading, and playing piano and steel pan.
