Obituary

Olive Sylvia Newell was born July 24th, 1936 in Nain (near Junction), Jamaica to Harvey and Elsie Barnes. Olive is the last to return home of the four siblings – Hupert (Mack), Reynell (Ren), Olive, and Elsie (Vonnie).

Olive’s mother was a schoolteacher and her father a farmer who owned ~ 40 acres of land. Although Olive’s mother died when she was just 10 years old, Elsie instilled in her daughter the importance of education and continuous learning. Within the next ten years, before his passing, Harvey instilled values of routine, responsibility, hard work and discipline.  Olive often shared her childhood memories of pre-dawn farm chores of feeding chickens, tying out the cows and goats, fetching water from the well, and sweeping the yard; all before heading off to school.

Olive went to Lilitz Moravian School and Brinkley Primary School. She became a pupil teacher while simultaneously studying for her local exams. In 1962, Olive graduated from Bethlehem Moravian (Teachers) College with a teaching degree, and subsequently taught at New Green Primary School in Manchester.

In 1966, Olive immigrated to New York with the help of her father’s youngest sister, Aunt Mae. In 1968, Olive married Wilfred “Busta” Newell and soon started a family with the births of Brook and Ava. Knowing a career within the Wall Street finance industry was untenable while raising a family and encouraged by the advice and examples of her in-laws, Olive pursued studies to become a Licensed Practical Nurse. Olive worked as a nurse for over 25 years, mostly at Coler Memorial Hospital. She worked night shifts so she could be home during the day to support and care for her family.

Olive was a stalwart of Moravian faith and church. Throughout her youth and young adulthood, she was involved in the Lititz Moravian Church. When she emigrated to New York, she attended John Hus in Brooklyn. In 1975, Olive and Sisters Linett Kong, Leonna Francis, and Reverend Goodman founded Queens Moravian Church which is now Grace Moravian Church in Springfield Gardens, NY. Olive was a generous, dedicated, and faithful member of Grace Moravian.

Olive Sylvia Newell passed away peacefully in her home in Bethesda, Maryland on Sunday October 27, 2024. She leaves behind her husband, Busta, her children, Brook and Ava, Duane, their spouses, grandchildren, and countless family and friends in New York, Maryland, Florida, Jamaica, and England.
