Sandy’s Poem

If you’re wondering where to find me,
I’ll tell you where I’ll be.
I’m in that in-between bit,
that space where sky meets sea,
in the whispers of the breeze
and the edges of your dreams,
close enough to almost touch
but slightly out of reach.
I’m in the moon and in the stars,
but never very far
and always, always
I’m there inside your heart.

Sandy, the beloved partner in life of her husband John “Jack” McPhee, died at home in Bethesda, Saturday, September 30, after a long battle with cancer. She was 81 years old. Born in Los Angeles, California, Sandy, as she was known, attended the University of California, where she met Jack and married in 1965. They left almost immediately for Jack to assume a two-year Peace Corps staff position in Mwanza, Tanzania. She had their daughter, Michele, in a remote mission hospital 20 miles from the town. Upon returning to the United States, the family settled in Bethesda. Their son, Todd, was born shortly thereafter.

Sandy was trained as an early childhood educator. She practiced in that field for several years. She was known for her organizational skills which she put to use to help family and friends and in administrative positions. She volunteered throughout her life in a variety situations, including joining a team, which helped to establish a local community swimming pool.

Sandy had a stylish creativity that was evident in everything she did. She was very engaging and made a lasting impression on her many friends by her welcoming smile, kindness and warmth. She is survived by her husband, Jack, and two children, Michele Duke of Frederick, Todd McPhee of Bethesda and four grandchildren Allie, Sean, Mia and Noah.
